ABOUT THE BOOK
In this wrenchingly honest account of one family’s loss of a loved one—a child—we experience love, fear, bereavement, anger, and despair, but also faith, hope, strength, and, eventually, peace. Many families confront tragedy but not many can share as eloquently how they experienced it and how it affected them as do the Reverend Dr. J. Phillips Noble and his wife, son, and daughter in this slim volume. The book was begun with poems written by Noble as he—a Presbyterian minister—tried to understand the illness and death of his 13-year-old son. In words spilled from his core being, Noble questions why his son had to suffer, mourns him, and examines his own understanding of God. Then, in essays written later, he probes the meaning of tragedy in our lives. Finally, Noble’s wife and children recall their own emotions and experiences and explain how the death of their son and brother affected their lives and remains with them. Anyone confronting similar losses in their lives will be moved and comforted by the powerful words in this book.

PRAISE
“Getting Beyond Tragedy is the straightforward, inspiring story of how one family experienced, endured and continues moving beyond a tragedy—the passing of the youngest of three children, a son who died of leukemia. Anyone grieving will be able to identify with the feelings described by the Noble family and will be encouraged to move beyond that loss in reading this book.” — Rev. Jasper N. Keith, Pastor, Decatur Presbyterian Church and Professor Emeritus, Columbia Theological Seminary

“Phil Noble bravely and generously allows us into the immense tragedy of the loss of his precious son, Scott. Although we long to comfort Dr. Noble as a grieving, loving father, he comforts us instead with his thoughtful, honest words. While Getting Beyond Tragedy does not answer the question of why tragedy happens— because it cannot—it reminds us that in the depths of our anguish we cannot rely on our own understanding, but we must trust in the Lord with all our hearts.” — Kristin Connor, Attorney and Senior VP, CureSearch National
